It was a few days after I had slipped my note to Julia inside her locker. She had come in to work and announced she was enrolling in cosmetology school starting in the fall, all paid for by a grant. She was walking on air. I’m sure that between the note and the prospect of going to school, she had a whole new outlook on life and herself. It was great to see.

During our regular Redjays’ lunch, she talked animatedly about the school. Jennifer and I listened and shared her enthusiasm.

Jason, however, was his usual quiet self. He is the strong and silent type that even Mr. Dorset cowers to. He’s only one of the Redjays by default. Meaning his name began with J and he happens to have the same lunch break time as the rest of us.

I worried, though when I would see Julia steal glances at him. He was completely unaware that she was eyeing him and, I believe, hoping it was him who wrote the notes. If Julia wasn’t happy with the big, strong, egg-headed boyfriend she already had, why would she seek out another of the same ilk? I always wondered that about girls that kept going for these types and got continually disappointed when they didn’t treat them the way they deserved, but then they would try it with another dude just like the first and get the same results.

I felt, and not just for my own benefit, that it was time Julia tried a different flavor: say, the shy nerdy type who was ready to show her what it feels like to be loved by someone who worshipped her, dreamt about her, fantasized about seeing her face reveal the ecstasy that my anxious body could give her…

I was seeing that in my mind as she talked. I tried to listen to what she was saying, but all I could see in my head was her undressing. I was just starting to imagine what color panties she wore when Mr. Dorset stormed into the break room, shaking any thoughts of pleasure out of my mind.

“Jennifer!” He barked, making her jump.

“Yes?” Her voice quivered and her eyes grew large.

“You know that set of jewelry we got in the other day? The gold with the heart and the diamonds? From the Avian line?”

“Uh-huh,” she nodded. Her face had gone noticeably pale.

“Well, the bracelet is missing.”

“Missing?”

“Missing. Have you let anyone try it on? Think! Did you let a customer try it on and then get distracted by something else and leave the customer wide open to walk away with it?”

“No,” she shook her head.

“You are the only Jewelry clerk. Nobody else has the key to get into that case except a manager.”

“Well, maybe a manager took it, then,” Jason said.

Mr. Dorset was so worked up, he didn’t cow down to Jason this time. “You, be quiet,” he barked. “Let me tell you all something,” he began in a quieter tone. “We are going to bring
